The Transfiguration of Christ
In the traditional ancient calendars of the church, August 6 marks the feast of the Transfiguration of Christ - the event in our Lord's life recorded for us in all three synoptic Gospels where he was transfigured on the mountain before Peter, James, and John such that "
his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering" (Luke 9:29)
It's from this incredibly important event in our Lord's earthly ministry that our parish draws its name. In order to more fully celebrate our feast of title, we are transferring our celebration to this coming week: Sunday, August 10.
In keeping with our parish tradition, we will have a celebratory pot-luck reception immediately following our Sunday service of Holy Communion. The reception will be held at the rectory (85 Columbia Ave - just two houses down from the church).
The church will provide a deli sandwich platter and drinks. Please bring a dish to share if you are able (if not, please come anyway).
The Collect for the Transfiguration of Christ:
O God, who on the mount didst reveal to chosen witnesses thine only-begotten Son wonderfully transfigured, in raiment white and glistering; Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may be permitted to behold the King in his beauty, who with thee, O Father, and thee, O Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth, one God, world without end. Amen. (BCP, p. 247)
